“Quinnie! I’m going out to the country club for a bit, are you sure you don’t feel like coming?” My mother’s voice rang through the house, causing me to sigh and sit up in my bed.
“No thank you!” I replied, a sense of relief washing over me when I heard the front door close. Things with my mother had been alright lately, I supposed. Nothing amazing; we certainly weren’t close by any means and didn’t speak of Beth or Puck or anything other than polite, strained conversation really. But our mutual hatred of my father brought about a common bond, and I figured that was better to start with than nothing.
Finally pulling myself out of bed I glanced at my alarm clock to see that it was nearing ten AM. It was Saturday and I had no real plans to speak of, so I took my time showering and getting ready. I picked out a simple white sundress from my closet, red flats, and a red bow for my hair after I straightened it. A light coat of make-up deemed me complete, so I grabbed my bag and headed downstairs. My mother had never been a five star chef, most of the time we ate out or ate something the housekeeper had prepared. I hadn’t seen Inez in awhile though, so I figured she had been let go some time during my… absence. Normally I would have spread some jam on wheat toast and an apple, but to be honest today I just felt like eating sugar and fat. I was working to impress Coach Sylvester to let me back on the Cheerios, so my diet for the past few weeks had been strict and I’d been exercising around the clock to get back in shape. But today I just didn’t feel like it.
Screw Coach Sylvester. One munch fest wouldn’t kill me. I hopped in my car and drove to the nearest seven-eleven where I knew I could find an endless supply of junk for a fraction of the cost, along with the added bonus of not being seen by anyone from school. Grabbing a basket near the door I took my time browsing through the tiny isles, the only other people around being a bored, older looking lady behind the register and two younger guys filling up their gas tank and buying cigarettes. Ten minutes later I felt satisfied with my Hostess Zebra Cakes, Reeses Peanut Butter Cups, a small bag of blue cotton candy, and Skittles. I couldn’t help but laugh at the slushee machine. So many memories, good and bad, came at the sight of it. Oh what the hell? I grabbed a large plastic cup and filled it with the icy cherry flavored concoction before making my way to the register.
After paying for my breakfast I was headed back to my car when I caught sight of a small bench just past the convenience store. The sun was out but it wasn’t hot, so I sat myself down and began to munch. It was nice to be alone with my thoughts for a change, and be able to eat what I wanted without being judged.
